Getting fit is fun!

I was hoping to go on a hike today as I mentioned in my last post. Too many things were working against that, though, so I'm spending the day at home, which is of course the far less exciting option. Work, deadlines, that sort of thing. I've also managed to develop an ear infection so best keep myself warm. I have signed up for an event with the hiking club in question in the new year so I'm not completely chickening out of it, really I am not. I really would've wanted to do that walk today, the weather in London was perfect for it (for this time of year anyway).

I am, however, happy to report that I'm getting into an exercise routine again and really starting to enjoy it. I quite often start an exercise routine but then something happens like an illness that makes me stop and take a break and after that it can be difficult to get into it again. Once I do, though, it actually becomes addictive and even exciting. Yes!

My choice of exercise method is a DVD by Jillian Michaels called 30 Day Shred. I'm not big on exercise DVDs, in fact along with another Jillian Michaels DVD it's the only one I own. I  found it on Amazon (where else?) when playing with the thought of buying one and browsing them. It had such rave reviews that I became curious about it and bought it.

Miraculously, I was hooked from the first time I did the workout. I'd been expecting to collapse at the end of it (if I made it that far) with the taste blood in my mouth, legs and arms shaking, followed by sore and aching muscles for at least a week. None of that happened. I actually enjoyed the workout. Who would've guessed? There's a lesson to be learned here - bury your prejudices and have an open mind. And that applies to just about everything.

I've now started working out again after a break and I'm getting to a point where it's becoming really enjoyable and every time I'm able to give a bit more. It's exciting to notice how much easier it's getting and how I'm getting stronger and my endurance level is improving. Every time I want to push myself harder because I'm actually enjoying working out my muscles, even if it means they're a bit sore afterwards.

Equally exciting are the side effects of my improved physical condition. I crave healthier foods and the combination of that and burning more calories is of course that my weight is going down. Yay!

I'm particularly ecstatic about losing a couple of pounds because I'm going on a beach holiday in a couple of weeks' time. Yes, panic has been rising at the thought of wearing bikinis and swimsuits but it's under control now, I'm feeling calmer. There are less wobbly bits than before and I fit into all my nice shorts and swimsuits, I tried them on last night. Phew.

Just to make sure that I feel as good as possible on holiday I spent a good few hours last night shopping for new swimsuits and holiday accessories online. Shopping for clothes becomes so much more fun when you lose some weight. There is of course the risk that when I get the stuff I ordered it doesn't fit but hey, at least I tried and it's not like this is the best time of year for finding swimsuits in the shops.

The real challenge is for me to keep up with my exercise routine, even after my holiday. I want to do it, not just because I feel so much better about myself when I weigh less, but because I want to have a toned body and be healthy. And because achieving all that is exciting. Really it is, I'm not making this up. Challenge yourself to try and see for yourself.

On that note, it's time for a workout before my dinner. Time to get shredded.

Getting started

It’s been far too long since my first post. How did this happen? Well, I sort of panicked, thinking ‘oh no, now the blog is live, I’m going to have to do something!’ and then of course froze and did nothing. Hence a little cooling down period. Or should I say thawing period, allowing myself to return to a temperature in which I can function. I do have an excuse of being unwell over the last few days so I couldn’t have gone out last weekend anyway, but that’s just really lame. I shouldn’t even have mentioned it. I’m happy to report though that immediately after posting my first blog post, I seemed to develop an ‘excitement awareness’ and started coming up with ideas of what to do and even started a list. An idea of a holiday I’ve been wanting to go on for a few years now sprang to mind and I started looking into it. In fact, booking it was going be my task for the first week. What happened? My recurring health problems held me back. But then another thought came to mind. What if I use...

Making 2014 count

Christmas tree in Covent Garden, London You may have noticed the lack of images of Christmas trees here (see my previous post) . I did take some, they just never made it here until today (I’m putting one up now to show that I really took some). Stress took over in December. Work was very busy and come evening all I wanted to do was to forget about doing anything unpleasant and just do what I fancied. And it wasn't blogging. At first I was stressing about not producing any content for my blog and then I started questioning whether the whole blog was a very good idea after all. Yes, over the holidays I was seriously considering deleting this blog. My two blog posts that I’d crafted with care and excitement and fear, too. No more. Then I wouldn’t need to stress about blogging. But then the year changed and I was setting goals for the new year and came across the question of the blog; yes or no? It would’ve been much easier to decide ‘no’ but somehow I couldn’t let myself do that...

Bucket loads of fun

I'm taking my list of things to do by the end of the summer to a whole new level. I'm going to create a bucket list. You know, things you want to do before you die. In a way not a very cheerful thought but at the same time quite elating, I find. I have a list of goals I want to achieve somewhere and even though I'm sure it's titled 'Things I want to be/do/have before I die', it just doesn't quite have the same ring to it as a bucket list does. There's an urgency attached to 'bucket list' that appeals to me right now. Something that I hope will keep it from getting buried under a pile of invoices, bank statements, to do lists etc. I'm very aware that the reason I'm thinking about writing my bucket list is because of the mid-life crisis I'm going through and the slightly panicked thoughts I'm having at times, such as 'there's not much time left anymore while I'm still more or less able' which is sort of ridiculous ...
